Panda-Ov-Toes, Senior Cat and my online namesake, has had a rough couple of weeks.
She's survived it, and in better shape than ever, much to the credit of Dr. Bonnie and her staff at The Cat Hospital of Kitchener-Waterloo. If you live in this region and have a cat, THIS is the veterinary practice for you!!!
What was to be routine dental work turned into an incident of acute pulmonary edema from the anaesthetic, a quick rescue by Dr. Bonnie and her staff, a freaked-out kitty for a day or so after recovering her from that, then a cardiac ultrasound to try and figure out WHY the edema happened. Barely settled from that vet visit, my poor old lady developed a swollen, painful jaw and went off her food - turns out the dental work was more critical than routine, as she had broken and infected teeth, not just tartar. So first she got a pain patch, and next another *very* *careful* anaesthesia attempt finally led to dental work being accomplished. While Panda was unconscious, Dr. Bonnie also did two biopsies on spots in her mouth, a full exam, and a nail trim to boot, not wanting to have to put her back through anything else.
So Panda is back home, looking a bit mangy from all the shaved spots, with a transdermal pain patch still glued to her and two weeks of antibiotics. Maybe it's the drugs or maybe the fact that her mouth is probably less painful than it has been for months, but she's bouncing around like a kitten again (she's somwhere around 10-11 years).
Folks, remember to hug your pet's doctor. In the end of it, unbelievably, Dr. Bonnie didn't charge me anything more than her original dental quote, either. She probably paid out-of-pocket twice what she charged me, just because she was determined to do the best she could for my kitty and had the cardiac and biopsy tests done without technically getting me to sign off. I would have happily paid that to have my happy healthy kitty back, but she didn't even ask.
